Shtetl is the term in Yiddish for a town. Shtetls were usually small market towns prior to World War II in Poland and Eastern Europe, and they  had a large Yiddish-speaking Jewish population. Jewish town was inhabited by a compact Jewish population,  and they were different from their gentile  neighbors by religion, language, occupation and culture. The shtetl was defined by the interaction on economic and social fields of Jews and peasants.

There is a number of former shetls around Krakow that can be visited as one of options while you are in Krakow, as well as they might be a place of your ancestry.
